Introduction :

4th June 2024 in India saw not only the declaration of the much-awaited Lok Sabha election results but the results of the NEET UG medical entrance exam as well. This exam, attempted by around 23 lakh students, was highly competitive and is likely to provide only admission to around 1 lakh students nationwide. Amid allegations of several perfect scores from the same exam center, paper leaks, and mathematically impossible marking irregularities, the #NeetScam2024 scandal has erupted, casting doubt on the integrity of the National Testing Agency (NTA). People are questioning NTA on discrepancies in the NEET 2024 examination. All this has led to heightened stress, lack of confidence and anxiety among the aspirants.

NEET Scam :

The key reasons for which NTA is being question on the disappearances in the NEET examination are 67 Students have scored a perfect 720 on 720 score whereas  in 2023 this number was around 2 ,  Releasing NEET-UG results 10 days earlier on June 4, same day when LS poll results were announced moreover , numerous NEET-UG 2024 toppers are from the same examination center , the rank inflation is so high that a student scoring 650 out of 720 will not be able to get a govt medical college this year also there are allegations of NEET 2024 question paper being leaked all this has led us  to question is this examination even fair enough ? Being a doctor is a dream for many of us, medical is one of the most noble professions. The amount of compassion and kindness you need to become a doctor is immense.

Impact on Mental Health :

Students prepare for this pre medical examination since they get into 11th standard. It requires hard work of two constant years or even more. Unfolding of this scam has made all of them question the education system. The impact of this extends beyond students to parents and educators. Tutors and coaching institutes are trying to reassure students, but the trust deficit is hard to bridge. The allegations of paper leaks have demoralized many students. It created a lot of anxiety among the students, most of them are scared to take a drop or the juniors who were planning to give the exam in future are now scared and are looking for alternate career options.  There are speculations of a re-exam now, students who have scored above 680 are confused if they should study again now or wait for the counseling. This scam has led to demotivation, poor concentration, and procrastination. In the days after the announcement of the NEET results, at least three teenager aspirants have died by suicide in Kota. All this scam has also put parents and teachers in a fix. They too are confused as to how to proceed. They too are facing issues with their mental health. Most of the students are feeling lost and are confused now as to how to procced in life .

Conclusion :

Seeing this the students might shift to careers seen as more transparent. Mental health experts stress the need for accountability from authorities due to the impact of scams on students’ careers and mental health. We truly believe in our judiciary; the NEET scam case is being heard in the honorable supreme court and we hope there will be considerable changes and that justice will prevail. Till then I urge every aspirant to do practice mindfulness and indulge in activities which make them feel happy , your mental health should be your priority now .
